Flood survivors’ stories are being turned into digital evidence that could sharpen climate science, a new effort across four African nations shows.

From rain‑soaked homes to research tables:

When torrential rain hit eMbo on Durban’s edge, Balungile and her children slept with windows cracked open, fearing another wall collapse. Three years later she still hears the storm and cries, unsure what the next downpour will bring. Traditional data‑gathering—satellite maps, hospital records, epidemiological estimates—can count deaths and chart flood extents, but they miss the lived anxiety that follows each heavy sky.

The Wema project, short for the impact of extreme weather events on the mental health of vulnerable populations in Africa, set out to fill that gap. Researchers trained 37 community members from South Africa, Kenya, Mozambique and Burkina Faso to craft their own digital narratives, blending spoken word, sketches and short video clips.

These community researchers then examined the collection, using the insights to shape policy priorities and guide future study. The approach treats personal accounts not as anecdotes but as a form of evidence that sits alongside large‑scale surveys.

Workshops that turn pain into pixels

In Nairobi, a team from the African Population and Health Research Centre taught a Kenyan engagement group the storytelling method. Participants gathered in a circle, checked in, and were asked to recall a single, vivid moment when extreme weather had shaken their mental wellbeing. Prompts on the walls asked them to consider how fear altered their coping and what, if anything, eased the strain.

Over five days the research centre morphed into a studio. Tables overflowed with paper, paints, glue and coloured pencils. Participants wrote, drew, and finally recorded their illustrated tales on tablets, producing brief videos that captured terror, loss and moments of community care.

The workshops were not just creative outlets; mental‑health professionals were on hand to support anyone who became upset. Local engagement teams, fluent in regional languages, helped create a safe space for sharing.

Analyzing narratives for policy insight

After the videos were made, they reconvened a month later to watch each other’s work. Small groups annotated sticky notes, clustered themes and debated meanings. They asked what patterns emerged, what surprised them and what the stories revealed about emotional impacts and coping needs.

This peer‑driven analysis placed the community at the heart of interpreting the evidence they generated. Their conclusions fed directly into discussions with government officials and health workers, shaping recommendations for disaster preparedness and mental‑health support.

Meanwhile, the project’s scientific arm continued household surveys, quantifying anxiety, depression and post‑traumatic stress disorder rates after floods, cyclones and droughts. By comparing numbers with narrative themes, researchers identified where statistical trends aligned with personal accounts and where they diverged, uncovering blind spots that pure data would miss.

For instance, while surveys showed a rise in reported anxiety after a flood, the stories highlighted a specific fear of collapsing walls that had not been captured in any questionnaire. Such nuance can guide more targeted communication and infrastructure checks.

Why lived experience matters for climate research

Climate change is expected to increase the frequency and intensity of extreme weather across Africa. Understanding how these events affect mental health requires more than counting cases; it demands insight into how people interpret, remember and respond to trauma.

Integrating community‑generated narratives with scientific metrics offers a fuller picture. It moves beyond “what happened” to explore “how it felt” and “what helped or hindered recovery.” This blended evidence can improve the relevance of climate‑health policies, ensuring they address both physical damage and psychological scars.

Comparing this method to earlier disaster studies shows a shift. Past research often treated stories as background colour, whereas here they drive the analytical agenda. By treating survivors as co‑researchers, the project mirrors participatory approaches used in other public‑health fields, suggesting a broader move toward inclusive science.

As the findings circulate in local workshops, participants hope the insights will inform planning, communication and resource allocation. The ultimate goal is not just academic publication but tangible improvements in how communities brace for and rebound from climate shocks.
