July 2014 – December 2017
This project called “Sorting and Recycling within Organizations and Municipalities” in partnership with Agence Francaise de Developpement (AFD) aims to support 12 municipalities in their recycling efforts.
It puts in place an efficient and sustainable waste management system across Beirut, Mount Lebanon, the Beqaa, and North Lebanon.
The project is being executed in three steps:
- First, arcenciel organized awareness campaigns to reduce the produced waste and encourage sorting into different categories: plastic, metal, paper/cardboard, organic waste, and others.
- Second, sorting bins (for paper/cardboard, plastic and metal) are installed and collection points are established in target locations within each municipality, organization, and refugee camp. Waste is then collected and sent to one of arcenciel’s secondary sorting centers (in Halba, Damour, Baabda or Taanayel), where it is sorted again and compacted. Paper, metal and plastic waste is sent to recycling plants, and organic waste is transformed into compost.
- Finally, arcenciel published a « Municipal waste management guide » for the sorting and recycling of household waste in municipalities.
